Material Curation
Surface and Substance
Materials define the character of a space. They determine how light behaves, how sound travels, how surfaces feel to the touch. Material selection is not merely aesthetic but fundamentally experiential.
We favor materials that age gracefully—natural stone that develops patina, wood that darkens with use, metals that oxidize beautifully, textiles that soften over time. These materials tell stories and accumulate meaning.
Natural Stone
Marble, travertine, limestone—each variety offers distinct veining, color variation, and texture. We select stone not only for its appearance but for its performance in specific applications.
Stone surfaces require careful consideration of finish. Polished surfaces reflect light and feel formal. Honed surfaces absorb light and feel more tactile. The choice depends on the desired character of the space.
Textiles and Upholstery
Fabric selection determines comfort, durability, and visual weight. We consider not only pattern and color but fiber content, weave structure, and performance characteristics.
Natural fibers—wool, linen, cotton, silk—offer breathability and texture. Synthetic blends provide durability and ease of maintenance. The choice depends on use, location, and desired aesthetic.
Color Coordination
Color is not applied but revealed through material selection. We work with the inherent colors of materials rather than applying color as decoration.
Our palette is primarily neutral—whites, grays, beiges, browns—with occasional accents. When color is introduced, it is intentional and limited, often through art, textiles, or objects rather than walls or large surfaces.
